We are reading through the book of John at home and this morning read in chapter 12:
"But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, who whould betray Him, said, 'Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?' This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it." John 12: 4-6
Sound familiar?
President Johnson announced an 'unconditional war on poverty' in his first State of the Union address in January 1964. A 'war' that is still being waged by progressives today. If we truly had cared for the poor, or truly wanted to end poverty, we could have simply wrote everyone in America a check for 500k and wiped our hands- war over. If you want poverty to continue forever, then exactly what you should do is declare war on it, give people jobs in order to fight it, tax people in order to fight, create an entire infrastructure who's mission is to fight, all the while funneling money through bureaucracy. This is the greatest way to incentivize poverty to continue forever. The only way many keep their job, or continue to get re elected is if poverty remains. So, like Judas, they will proclaim with their mouth to care for the poor, and with their hands will ensure poverty remains. For poverty is their profit.

great observation. just began reading Henry Hazlitt's Economics in One Lesson and right out of the gate he is mentioning this same thing in principle. Very Thomas Sowell in getting right to the heart of it all. Judas cared not for the poor, but he cared a lot that others do. It lined his pockets handsomely.
