Amid the hustle of international travel, the connections, the delays, and the stress of it all, a man stops to play a public piano. This fellow traveler stopped to share beautiful music with anyone willing to take out their Bluetooth headphones and listen.
“One hand full of rest is better than two fists full of labor and striving after wind” Ecc 4:6
This was a great reminder that all creation speaks of a creator, all creation sings his praises - it is all around us if we are able to slow down and listen, and see. That piano music was beautiful because God gave us ears to enjoy it, it was beautiful because not everyone is gifted or trained to play it, we love music because our creator loves music.
This reminded me of a quote from CS Lewis that I read in an essay of his though I don’t remember the name. Lewis is explaining that you can reach after God or you can try to avoid him and he says about avoiding God:
“Avoiding him in many times and places has proved so difficult that a very large part of the human race failed to achieve it. But in our own time and place it is extremely easy. Avoid silence. Avoid solitude. Avoid any train of thought that leads off the beaten track. Concentrate on money, sex, status, health, and above all on your own grievances. Keep the radio on. Live in a crowd. Use plenty of sedation. If you must read books, select them very carefully but you’d be safer to stick to the papers. You’ll find the advertisements helpful, especially those with a sexy or snobbish appeal.”
Do you know someone who rejects the truth about our Savior? Does their life look anything like what CS describes above? Are you unintentionally aligning the day to day of your life with the narrative above?
“Aspire to live a quiet life, minding your own business and working with your hands” 1 Thes 4:11
great quote from CSL and great use of 1 Th 4:11. that is a well I often return to for refreshment
